A charity vet is set to star in a Channel 4 TV show called Britain’s Unsung Heroes which follows workers who have been keeping the UK’s essential services running during the coronavirus lockdown.

Hermione Hillen (26) originally from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, features in the fascinating show providing behind the scenes access at one of leading veterinary charity PDSA’s busy Pet Hospitals – on Hurst Road in Croydon.

The show features one of PDSA’s hero vet teams as they continue to work tirelessly on the frontline, running an emergency-only service in their Pet Hospitals to ensure sick pets can receive the life-saving care they need during the pandemic.

PDSA Veterinary Surgeon, Hermione Hillen, studied at the Royal Veterinary College. After graduating in 2017, Hermione joined PDSA’s graduate scheme working in Southampton and Bournemouth. For the last two years she has worked at Croydon’s PDSA Pet Hospital, providing free and reduced-cost veterinary care and treatment to pets in need.

She said: “The coronavirus crisis has had a huge impact on us as vets but world keeps on turning. Pets still get sick or injured and their owners rely on us to be there to help prevent pain and suffering.

“The show offers an opportunity to see what an important role PDSA plays in keeping pets safe and healthy across the UK.

“Every day at PDSA is different, and that’s even more so during this crisis,” added Hermione. “You never know what’s coming through the door next. That’s what makes it a fascinating job and I’m so proud to work for the charity.”

Croydon PDSA Pet Hospital is one of 48 Pet Hospitals the charity has nationwide, but they are facing a crisis and need your help.

PDSA’s veterinary care – which is a lifeline to so many owners across the UK – costs £60 million a year to run. But with retail shops closed and fundraising events cancelled, the charity is losing around £3 million a month in income.

With the country plunged into financial uncertainly, and more than a million extra Universal Credit claims, PDSA expects the number of pets needing care will increase by around 50,000.

Produced by ITN Productions for Channel 4, Britain’s Unsung Heroes, airs on Thursday 27 May at 9pm.
