Please find below a guest story by Grace Merritt about her cat Archie.

Living in the country, as we do, gives Archie ready access to the resident rodent population. He often brings home his reluctant houseguests in varying states of health from alive, mostly alive, definitely dead and, in some cases, as dismembered body parts. It’s not an ideal situation, especially for the mice, but I’ve learned to live with it. One night when I came home from work and went to check Archie’s food supply, I found a dead mouse in his water dish.  Naturally, I wondered why. Was it there to keep fresh for later? Was he spicing up his water with the essence of a mouse? Maybe it was a message that he was ready for a switch to wet food?

I went online to see if other cat owners had cats that put interesting things in their water dishes, too. The theory that made the most sense to me was that when he carried the mouse inside, he walked by his food dish, saw there was food in it, though, “Oh, Goody! Cat food!” and dropped the mouse in the water dish because it just happened to be next to the food dish.

I may never know for sure. But I’ve resigned myself to the reality that as long as we live where there are mice to catch, Archie will catch them. Only he knows why the mouse ended up in the water bowl, and he’s not talking.
